FIRE CHIEF - CHAPTER 1 # 2

TEN YEARS YESTERDAY - CHAPTER  1
1. Did somebody shoot me? The pain is a ten; it takes my breath away. I stagger and fall to one knee. The woods are silent, except for the gentle hush of a million snowflakes falling through the treetops. If I'd been shot, surely I would have heard something. Wham! There it goes again; the pain knocks me down onto my left knee. It shoots through me like a bullet. My left arm feels like it's going to fall off. I go down on both knees and try to come to my senses. What's happening to me? I can't keep a thought in my head. Suddenly, a wave of nausea comes over me. I throw up what's left of my oatmeal into the pure whits snow, making a small, psychedelic-shaped, brown blotch. My head is pounding and I look around for some kind of support. Off to my right is a huge ponderosa pine, but I can't reach it. I fall to my knees, hunched over, head down.
